Preservation of the Daring
The Daring, a two mast schooner built in 1863 at in Mangawhai is in the process of being preserved.
After being purposefully beached by Captain Phipps and his crew in 1865 and spending 153 years buried under the iron sand, this beautiful boat was discovered when a weather event shifted the sands, exposing her at Te Oneone Rangatira near Muriwai in Auckland.
An extensive "rescue" mission ensued, and in May 2021, The Daring was brought home to Mangawhai.
The Mangawhai Daring Trust is working tirelessly to preserve this beauty to the condition it was in when discovered on the beach. They look forward to sharing it with the public in a purpose built, moisture and temperature controlled "Daring Discovery Centre" in the coming years.
